Departmental Honor Society Offerings

Below are the honor societies available to eligible students in each academic department.

    Membership Information

    Applications for membership in the Connetquot High School National Honor Society will begin in mid-May. All Sophomore and Junior students who possess the necessary qualifications for membership are invited to apply. The Connetquot Honor Society is an organization that recognizes students who possess leadership, scholarship, character and service. All of these elements will be evaluated in your application, as well as a review of your disciplinary record.

    Eligibility Requirements

    • Sophomores
      • A minimum G.P.A. of 90.0 total cumulative average
      • No failures in any marking period or final exam
      • Active membership (with 75% attendance) in 9th and 10th grade in acceptable extra-curricular activities
      • 30 total hours of documented community service within the last two years
    • Juniors
      • A minimum G.P.A. of 90.0 total cumulative average
      • No failures in any marking period or final exam
      • Active membership (with 75% attendance) in 10th and 11th grade in acceptable extra-curricular activities
      • 30 total hours of documented community service within the last two years

    In addition to an interview, you must also submit:

    • Teacher Verification Form must be completed by the applicant to verify the seven teachers who were given the candidate evaluation cards.
    • Activity Verification Form must be filled out by each advisor from the eligible activities who can verify your participation. Advisors must be from Connetquot High School or have positions of responsibility in the service organizations with which you have been involved. For activities outside of CHS, a letter from the service organizations letterhead must be included stating the dates active, a signature and contact information.
      • Sophomores - Fill out Activity Verification Form for 9th and 10th grade activities.
      • Juniors - Fill out Activity Verification Form for 10th and 11th grade activities.
    • A typed 200-word essay describing an experience or event in your life that speaks to your leadership and/or character.
    • A character reference letter, from someone outside of your household (not a family member, teacher, or student), explaining how you exhibit leadership and/or character skills. Advisors and coaches ARE acceptable.
    • 30 total hours of community service performed within the last two years
    • 4th Quarter report card for the current school year.

  • Science National Honor Society

    Membership Information

    Membership in this prestigious organization offers students a certificate of membership from the national organization, honor cords at graduation and the opportunity to participate in a variety of STEM activities.

    Eligibility Requirements

    • Members must be in their last two years of high school (Exception: if you took AP Biology in 9th grade you may apply as a 10th grader).
    • Must be enrolled in a science course. Must have completed at least one honors level science course and/or an upper level science course prior to or enrolled in 11th grade.
      • Ex: Living Environment Honors, 9th Grade AP Biology, AP Science Course, Physics, College Medical Anatomy & Physiology
    • A member must be enrolled in at least one upper level science course during 12th grade.
      • Ex: AP Biology, AP Chemistry, AP Physics, AP Environmental Science Physics, College Medical Anatomy & Physiology, Junior/Senior Science Research
    • Must maintain an unweighted GPA of 90% or higher.
    • Attend at least 70% of meetings
    • Attend at least 50% of activities
    • Keep current on dues of $20.00 per year (one time fee for new members)
    • Complete at least 10 hours of science tutoring per year
    • Display honorable behavior, character and commitment
  • National English Honor Society

    Membership Information

    Membership in this prestigious national organization offers students the opportunity to participate in a variety of English Language Arts based activities and honor cords of distinction at graduation for active members.

     

    Eligibility Requirements

    For Consideration into the NEHS members must:

    • Be currently enrolled in an AP level English course and maintain enrollment in AP English courses over the course of their High School career.
    • Be enrolled in and successfully complete a minimum of one (1) English elective course each year of enrollment.
    • Participate in at least one (1) organization; can be either a club or extracurricular activity (either inside or outside of Connetquot High School).
    • Submit a paragraph writing sample demonstrating English proficiency (minimum 250 words).
    • Writing Sample Topic: What can you offer to the National English Honor Society? Why are you interested in becoming a member of this honor society?
    • Achieve and maintain an overall GPA of 90% or higher.
    • Achieve and maintain an overall ELA GPA of 92% or higher.
    • Membership Application Instructions

    Responsibilities of Accepted Members

    • Attend at least 80% of meetings
    • Attend at least 75% of activities
    • Complete at least 10 hours of English tutoring/English based community service.
    • Keep current with dues of:
      • $20.00 for NEW members.
      • Yearly dues of $10.00 for current members.
      • Display honorable behavior, character, commitment and stay true to the NEHS motto “Getat Sceal Mi Aire” - Duty goes with Honor
  • Logo for Rho Kappa National Social Studies Honor Society, featuring a globe and a torch. 

    Application Guidelines & Requirements

    1. At least 1 Social Studies elective
    2. 1 social-studies Themed club
    3. 2 recommendations from SS teachers
    4. Good grades!

    How to be a member in good standing AND get Senior Cords

    1. Complete the club’s community service requirement, and pay a one-time dues fee of $30 (includes your cords AND a T-Shirt)
    2. Attend at least 75% of meetings
    3. Participate in the induction ceremony and all major events
    4. Maintain your average (90 weighted overall, 93 in social studies class), and your integrity for the rest of your time at CHS

  • Mu Alpha Theta

    Membership  Information

    Membership in this prestigious society offers students a certificate of membership from the national organization, honor cords at graduation for those achieving High Honors, eligibility for scholarships, the opportunity to participate in mathematics competitions, and the opportunity to participate in STEM-based activities in and out of school.

     

    There are two levels of membership for Mu Alpha Theta You must choose which is appropriate for you.

    Applying for Associate Membership

    • Student has completed Algebra I with a final course average of 85 or above
    • Student is enrolled in Geometry and maintains a course average of 85 or above
    • Geometry Teacher gives his/her endorsement for Associate Membership
    • Student submits Application for Associate Membership by the first Friday of October

    Associate Members are welcome to participate in all events, but are not voting members of the club.

    Applying for Full Membership

    • Student has completed Algebra I and Geometry.
    • Student is enrolled in Algebra II (or higher) and maintains a course average of 85 or above
    • Student has an unweighted GPA in all math department courses of 85 or above
    • Current math teacher gives his/her endorsement for Membership
    • Student submits Application for Full Membership by the first Friday of October

    Maintaining Full Membership

    • Attend at least 70% of meetings
    • Attend at least 50% of activities
    • Keep current on dues of $15 per year
    • Maintain an unweighted GPA in all math department courses of 85 or above
    • Complete at least 15 hours of math tutoring per year
    • Be an active member of at least one STEM Club such as:
      • Math League (within Mu Alpha Theta)
      • Robotics
      • Science Olympiad
      • Computer Programming
      • Animal Conservation
      • Other (subject to approval)
      • Achieving High Honors

    (To Wear Honor Cords from MAΘ at Graduation)

    • Complete at least one math department course every year of your high school career (grades 9–12)
    • Participate in at least one Math Competition/Contest/Tournament over your high school career (grades 9–12)
    • Complete at least one AP level math department course (Statistics, Calculus AB or BC, Computer Science)
    • Complete at least one credit of STEM elective(s). (Options include courses in: engineering, computer programming, science research, college medical anatomy, and more. A 2nd AP course in math counts too!)
  • National Business Honor Society

    Purpose

    • Promote and recognize academic achievement in business education at Connetquot
    • Foster and recognize leadership skills and character development
    • Help members grow ethically and socially by promoting and encouraging an interest in business; and
    • Encourage member involvement in service-learning initiatives

    Application Guidelines & Requirements

    • Must be a high school junior or senior
    • Must have completed or be currently enrolled in his/her third business course (includes Spring enrollment)
    • Must stay enrolled in a business class for the duration of membership
    • Must have a minimum standard 3.5 GPA average in business courses (90)
    • Must have a minimum standard 3.2 GPA overall since 10th grade (88)
    • Outstanding academics, character, leadership and service in the school community
    • Available to attend meetings and activities NBHS organizes
    • Must submit a complete application, copy of HS transcript and essay
      • A well constructed essay must be typewritten explaining why you feel you should be accepted to the NBHS, including what qualities you exhibit would contribute to this organization as well as your personal attributes that would help foster the growth and reputation of this organization.  Based on structure, grammar, content, and quality of the writing, we give each essay one of the following ratings: FAIR, GOOD, VERY GOOD, or EXCELLENT.
  • Tri-M Honor Society

    Application Requirements

    • Must be enrolled in a music ensemble and have an overall ensemble average of 95 or above.
    • Must have an overall average of 90 or above on your report card.
    • Must have ensemble teacher's approval and recommendation.
    • Must complete a NYSSMA Solo at NYSSMA Festival or for the Tri-M advisor. (Current 8th graders need to perform a level 3 solo. Current 9th-11th graders need to perform a level 4 or higher.) 
    • Must submit a personal statement explaining why being a part of Tri-M would be important and why music is valued in your life.
  • National Art Honor Society

    Application Requirements:

    • Open to 10th -12th grade students
    • Must be enrolled in an art class
    • Must maintain 90 or above average in the art classes
    • 10 hours of community service.
    • 90 percent attendance at meetings
  • World Language Honor Society

    Application Requirements:

    • Open to juniors and seniors 
    • No marking period grade lower than 90 in your high school World Language classes. 
    • Overall final average must be 85.0% (unweighted) or higher.
    • No marking period grade lower than 70% in any course. (not mid-term or final, just the quarter grades.
    • Essay on selected related topic
    • A copy of your high school transcript (you can request this from guidance)
    • If you are applying for more than one Honor Society you must fill out an application for each.
